An independent scholar is anyone who conducts scholarly research outside universities and traditional academia. Independent scholars play an especially important role in areas such as art history and other humanities fields. In fields such as advanced mathematics, physics and engineering, however, relatively few researchers make contributions outside the context of established institutes and organizations.
